How Airports are Protecting Passengers with Advanced Radio Solutions: A Lakeland Communications Blog

Washington_Dulles_International_Airport_at_Dusk

Airports are very complex work environments, making communications between staff members difficult. In order to properly relay information, airports need communication systems that can work indoors, outdoors, and even through giant metal bodies – like airplanes.  And they need to do all of this over large distances.

Not only are these environments strenuous on communication, but airports facilitate large numbers of staff who must work in tandem, despite working for different airlines. These large workforces performing diligently behind-the-scenes at airports must manage the flow of aircrafts and people, doing their best to keep everything running smoothly.

For airports, communication is key. Their need for a far-reaching wireless communication system that can coordinate the efforts of upwards of thousands of people working simultaneously across large areas is imperative. Hytera America has identified this problem, and developed innovative radio solutions to facilitate this crucial communication.

Since its founding in 1993, Hytera has been dedicated to the development, manufacture, and sales of two-way radios and wireless trunking systems. Hytera radios and repeaters allow airport staff to effectively communicate with each other.

Think of an airport as a small city. So many diverse processes are required to make it run that it takes an army of workers to get everything accomplished. Thousands of people, planes, and other vehicles, all moving at one time takes effective communication to pull off. It only takes the slightest mistake to completely disrupt entire operations.

Hytera two-way radios help by providing clear digital voice communications, data messages, and integration into popular worker order, voice/data recording, and fleet management software. Hytera DMR and TETRA Series radios allow airports to manage and dispatch their entire staff efficiently.

Hytera also offers executive digital radios with their Z1p and X1p models, which have the same features, but in a slim pocket-sized design that makes carrying and operating the radio easy and unobtrusive.

With Hytera’s wide variety of accessories – including heavy duty earmuffs, as well as covert and Bluetooth earpieces – airport employees are able to easily communicate in noisy environments.

All of Hytera’s two-way radios are equipped with high capacity batteries, ensuring a single charge will last for multiple shifts when needed, so that employees never get stuck in a situation where they can’t communicate with each other.

Hytera also provides base stations to repeat their radio signals and extend coverage for larger airports, providing a customizable radio solution for those looking to migrate over to an optimal digital communications solution. Hytera DMR Tier III Trunking Pro and Trunking Lite systems are held to a paragon standard as they allow for accurate GPS data, end-to-end encryption of voice and data, and excellent mobile management.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest in the country (boasting its own zip code), has its own police force, fire protection, and emergency medical services, as well as employs an on-airport staff of over 60,000 people daily. Spanning nearly 27 square miles, it is the way station for 26 passenger airlines. Without a faultless communication system, airports like DFW would not be able to function.

Sebastien Fabre, network and mobility director of Specialists in Air Transport Communications and IT solutions (SITA), believes that wireless systems “enable significant improvements in operational efficiency and real time information exchange.” He states, “The biggest challenge is the need to provide coverage inside a large building while at the same time covering a large area outdoors, and this must be done while paying close attention to the final cost.”

Airports are complicated operations that involve thousands of people and moving parts, all of which need constant and reliable communication. Hytera two-way radios and wireless trunking systems are uniquely positioned to effectively handle the critical communication needs of complex transportation environments.
